It’s not as popular as the FIFA World Cup.  It doesn’t have the prestige of the Olympics, or the power of the Super Bowl.  But every four years an international tournament delights nations across the globe; that tournament is the Rugby World Cup.

This year, twenty teams take to pitches across England and Wales in their pursuit of the Webb Ellis Cup, awarded to the winner of the tournament.  Since the inaugural tournament in 1987, only four nations have captured the championship.  This year, there are 16 other sides hoping to change that.

#RWC2015 is officially open....enjoy every single minute, we will! https://t.co/oZHLca6dT9

Despite Rugby not quite yet breaking into the mainstream sports culture in North America, and certainly not anywhere near the Big 5 (NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, MLS), the sport is slowly growing every year, and with this running of the tournament, the hype has never been higher.  Holding the tournament in England, the country known as “the birthplace of rugby” as well as being one of the wealthiest and prestigious rugby nations in the world, expectations are at an all-time high.

This video from the Opening Ceremony, depicts the legend of Webb Ellis, and the creation of rugby.  Prepare for goosebumps, rugby fans.
From a Canadian perspective, Team Canada has yet another opportunity to improve on their 18th-place world ranking, and continue to grow the game in Canada.  Senior men’s national head coach Kieran Crowley knows exactly what this tournament means for Canada. “We want to put our rugby in place and compete with the best in the world,” said Crowley.

His squad will have the opportunity to compete with some of the best, as they battle against Ireland, France, Italy, and Romania in Pool D.

The tournament runs from September 18 – October 31, 2015. It is guaranteed to be full of upsets, passion, graceful violence — rugby is the hooligans’ game played by gentlemen, after all — as well as the energy that comes with the world of rugby coming together to compete for the tile of best rugby union nation in the world.

Grab your boots, your popcorn, and your scrum caps because the 2015 Rugby World Cup is in full swing.
